We seem to be so concerned about our own welfare that we have little time to think about the needs of others that are, more often than not, greater than our own. What has happened to cause this self-focus at the expense of the common good?

The world has become very small since with all the means of modern communication, we’re able to immediately see what’s happening on the other side of the world. This results in our seeing the vastness of the problems of poverty, war, starvation and the general suffering of humanity. I think this has tended to scare us as ndividuals and caused us to become overly concerned about our own welfare, to the point that we look at the world and say, “The problems are too big and I am only one person and therefore I am incapable of solving any of the problems. The best thing I can do is to look after myself and not contribute to the number of those in need.”

If everyone takes this attitude, then no one will ever help anyone. No one ever said that you or I alone had to solve the problems of the world. But if we are willing to work with others, we will be able to solve bigger problems than if we go at them alone. The world is a huge place with seemingly insurmountable problems. But there’s also a huge number of people in the world and if everyone does a little, then I hink we will be amazed at how much we can achieve if we set our minds to solving some of the problems, injustices and sufferings in the world.

The widow in today’s Gospel does not give much, but she gives her contribution, in fact she gives more than she can afford. If we all follow her example, and what we give is used well, I believe there would be far less, and possibly even none, of the suffering we see in the world today. Mother Teresa did what she could to help the abandoned dying of the world and has inspired others to do the same. Here is a perfect example for us to follow.Fr. Steve Tynan

Reflection Question:

When was the last time I went out of my way to help a stranger? How long is it since I visited someone in prison, clothed the naked, fed the hungry or cared for the sick?

Jesus, the social teaching of the Church is very clear that we have responsibility to care for the needs of others. Grant me the grace to be generous in sharing all I have with those in need.
Serve on, serve well!!!

It is proven many times that when the need arises, not even a coin is in my pocket. But the Lord provides. When I want to give, and I only have enough to get by for the day, the Lord always test my faith. If I follow HIS WILL, HE certainly make the way and HE definitely TAKES CARE OF YOU.

I realized that what we are here for in this earth, is because of other people. It could be your wife, husband, children, friend, neighbor and our community. Reflect today WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU HERE FOR?

Below is another reflection I wanted to share with you...

“We have given everything to follow you.” – Mark10:28

I had just given my life to Christ. The highlight of the afternoon was the Holy Mass. During the offertory, I was indecisive about how much to give. As the basket came, I closed my eyes and dropped in P500. It was the biggest contribution I had ever given at Mass. After that, I felt that the Lord smiled.

At another occasion, I was down to my last P50 bill and a few coins. The coins were enough to get me home. That evening, the community asked for a contribution to help in the construction of our new building. People moved forward with their donations as they announced the amount to the congregation. I wanted to give but what I had was embarrassing to announce compared to the thousands my friends were offering. But later, I went forward anyway and offered my widow’s mite. The Lord smiled.
The times when I gave in obedience and faith are when I felt Jesus was pleased. And we can never outgive Him. I’ve experienced unscheduled raises. I’ve been pirated by more than four companies in less than four years. I’ve had promotions when I felt I was not worthy. But my biggest satisfaction is to know that I’m doing His will and making Him smile. (Ariel Driz)

REFLECTION:

Have you made God smile lately with your giving?

Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to be generous. However, let me do it for the right reasons and grant me the grace to enjoy it with You. Amen.

"EVERY DISABLED CHILD MATTERS...."

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_SL3LcrzpHS8/SDs_oY1ToZI/AAAAAAAADDY/iqvDEnKnpCY/s400/DSC03896.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204823757450092946" />

STIMULATION AND THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITY CENTER (STAC)-located at the back of the Kalibo Municipal Hall, Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. The Rotary World Peace Fellows are selected every year in a globally competitive process that begins when they apply through their local Rotary clubs. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to peace and international understanding through their personal and community service activities or academic and professional achievements.

Like the members of the classes preceding them, the 60 students in the 2008-10 class are a diverse group, representing 33 countries and an array of professional and cultural backgrounds. Their interests and areas of expertise include public health, education, international law, economic development, psychology, journalism, and social justice.

Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Robert S. Scott notes that 225 Rotary Center alumni already are making a difference in key decision-making positions in governments and organizations around the world. “It is this growing global network of participants, increasing by 60 every year, that makes us believe that peace is possible,” Scott says. “It’s not a dream -- it is reality.”

Let us give peace a chance! Let us support the Rotary World Peace Fellows, in compliance with the Fourth Object of Rotary: the advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
Serve on, serve well!!!

Enhancing Rotary’s public image and asking clubs and districts to partner more with The Rotary Foundation are just two of the new 2008-09 Foundation goals. Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe asked the more than 530 district governors-elect attending the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, to accept the duty of achieving the goals and to Make Dreams Real.

The 2008-09 Foundation goals are: 1. Keep our promise to eradicate polio; 2. Embrace the two pillars of support for The Rotary Foundation: the Annual Programs Fund through Every Rotarian, Every Year and the Permanent Fund; 3. Participate in Your Foundation/Our Foundation, a "lend a hand" program for sharing funds from club and district foundations to permanently establish the Rotary World Peace Fellows program and support global polio eradication. 4. Enhance Rotary's public image; and 5. Support the Future Vision Plan of The Rotary Foundation.

The first two items are similar to the 2007-08 goals of eradicating polio and ensuring contributions to the Foundation. The last three, however, are new. If Rotarians work together toward the third goal of supporting Your Foundation/Our Foundation, Majiyagbe believes the Foundation can both permanently endow the Rotary World Peace Fellowships program and help eradicate polio.
"Many Rotary clubs and districts have their own endowment funds or foundations, some of which have greater funds than our Rotary Foundation," he said. "In the past, The Rotary Foundation has sometimes viewed these entities as competitors for Rotarian contributions, but I would like to change that perspective. I would like to see our relationship move from that of competitors to partners."

The Foundation can accomplish much more if club and district foundations contribute at least 10 percent of their funds to the polio eradication effort and the peace fellowships program, said Majiyagbe. He also urged Rotarians to use their affinity credit cards, which have raised US$5.5 million for the Foundation since the program’s inception in 2000.

With so much to accomplish, now is the ideal time to work on the fourth goal of enhancing Rotary's public image, a task that must be carried out at the grassroots level. "Better public acknowledgement will help us attract new members to our Rotary clubs, and it will help us attract new donors to our Foundation," he said. The last goal of supporting the Future Vision Plan will help keep the Foundation viable, make it more efficient, and "meet the needs of the ages," said Majiyagbe.
Serve on, serve well!!!

It serves as an instrument of peace and humanitarian service by bringing people together and helping them better understand one another and their respective cultures, philosophies, and traditions.

During 2008-09, The Rotary Foundation will:
1. Keep our promise to eradicate polio.
2. Embrace the two pillars of support for The Rotary Foundation: the Annual Programs Fund through Every Rotarian, Every Year and the Permanent Fund.
3. Participate in Your Foundation/Our Foundation, a “lend a hand” program for sharing funds from club and district foundations to permanently establish the Rotary World Peace Fellows program and support global polio eradication.
4. Enhance Rotary’s public image.
5. Support the Future Vision Plan of The Rotary Foundation.

WHY ARE GOALS IMPORTANT?

The Rotary Foundation is a large and successful international organization. Its many accomplishments are realized through the efforts of individual Rotarians, their clubs, and districts. Our mission to achieve world understanding and peace is a lofty goal that can only be met through sustained action and the commitment of Rotarians. Each year, the president of Rotary International chooses a theme as an embodiment of the intentions of Rotarians, and the chair of The Rotary Foundation Trustees expresses the goals for the Foundation.

Goal setting helps us determine our priorities, get organized, make big decisions, and realize our dreams. When they are specific, manageable, and achievable, goals have the power to motivate and to foster commitment. Clearly stated goals provide a framework for measuring achievement and can be modified by experience to reflect an organization’s accomplishments.

We are all in the business of serving humanity. Let’s continue to do it well together.
Serve on, serve well!!!

The program is focused on providing working professionals from various industries with the conflict resolution tools they need to foster peace and peaceful conflict resolution in their fields. The requirements for this program are centered on appropriate professional experience and proven commitment to the field. The skills and theories learned can then be used by the participants in real life situations.

All Rotary clubs are invited to submit applicants. Rotary clubs and districts are not required to financially support their applicants. Contact your district Rotary Foundation chair if you have a suitable candidate in mind.

Week 35:
This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about a new volunteer position within Rotary called the Rotary Foundation Alumni Coordinators (RFACs). These new volunteer coordinators have been asked to encourage Rotary clubs and districts to involve Foundation program alumni in Rotary activities; to urge clubs to consider alumni as potential members of Rotary and as potential contributors to The Rotary Foundation; and to use alumni as effective advocates for the programs of The Rotary Foundation.

Alumni include individuals who have been part of a Group Study Exchange team or have been Ambassadorial Scholars or Rotary Peace Fellows. Do any of you know a Foundation alumnus that might be interested in joining Rotary? If so, contact your area Rotary Foundation Alumni Coordinator through your district Rotary Foundation Chair.
Serve on, serve well!!!

Earlier this Rotary year, we held seven such conferences, each drawing between 200 and 600 participants. I chose North America as the setting because of the region’s recent alarming decline in membership as well as its large pool of qualified prospective members, many of whom are just waiting for an invitation to join.

Each conference generated a high level of energy and a shared understanding of why membership is such an urgent matter. We talked about the challenges Rotary faces in this arena as the need for its service continues to grow. And we determined that the organization can’t grow, or even maintain its status quo, unless more Rotarians take on the responsibility of bringing in new members.

Right now, only about 18 percent of Rotarians ever bring a new member into their club. The great majority of our membership growth reflects the work of just a few individuals who take their responsibility very seriously. But that responsibility belongs to all of us, not just to those few. This is the premise of the “member get member” initiative I’ve been promoting this year. “Member get member” is not a campaign or contest. It is, very simply, the way we need to approach the whole question of membership for Rotary to survive and grow – the understanding that it is the responsibility of each one of us to bring in at least one new member every year.

Our North American conferences produced some encouraging results: In the first half of this Rotary year, every zone in the region showed a positive change in membership. Next year, President-elect Dong Kurn Lee plans to hold the events in 10 countries, building on the momentum we’ve developed and spreading the enthusiasm to other parts of the world.

As this Rotary year draws to a close, consider the benefits of fulfilling your individual responsibility of bringing one new member into your club. Think about having one more pair of hands to do Rotary’s work and strengthen your club’s service; one more person to embrace Rotary’s core values and bring help and hope where they’re needed; one more person who will not only show the world that Rotary Shares but also allow Rotary to Make Dreams Real.

Wilfrid J. In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each July, special effort is required to provide the 27,000 club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume and help them develop a good grasp of their duties in advancing Rotary’s program of service. It is usually held after the Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and before 1 July.

The purpose of the district assembly is to develop Rotary club leaders who have the necessary skills, knowledge, and motivation to lead an effective club. Participants include the president-elect and the incoming leadership team for the club, including: 1) Club secretary, 2) Club treasurer, and 3) Club committee chairs.

The district assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club. Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The assembly gives all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting. Usually eight to ten delegates from each club are invited to attend the training session.

Another important feature of a district assembly is a review by the incoming district governor of the program theme and emphasis as well as service goals for the coming year. Let us show our support for IDG Ems Nava as we Make Dreams Real this coming Rotary Year by attending the coming DISTAS.

Serve on, serve well!!!

The District Service Award is given to any Rotarian whose service to humanity deserves to be recognized. The District Governor can award up to 20 of these a year and the recipient is given a certificate. The Citation for Meritorious Service is awarded by the Trustees to one Rotarian from each district every year. Nominations are solicited from district governors and RI Directors. The Trustees consider these nominations throughout the year until 15 May. A handsome certificate in a walnut frame is sent for presentation to the recipient of this award. Four complete Rotary years after receiving the Citation for Meritorious Service, a Rotarian becomes eligible for the Distinguished Service Award. Because this is the Foundation's highest service recognition, a recipient's exemplary service to the Foundation must extend beyond the district level and over an extended period of time. Award recipients receive a cast bronze plaque mounted on a walnut base.

Do you know someone who is worthy of such an honor in our club?

Serve on, serve well!!!
