April is Rotary Magazine Month

The month of April is annually designated as "Rotary's Magazine Month," an occasion to recognize and promote the reading and use of the official RI magazine, The Rotarian, and the regional magazines as vehicle for communication and information in our organization.

Effective communications is critical to the success of any Rotary Club. Leaders that communicate effectively use a variety of tools. Many members listen carefully to announcements made at club meetings, retain the information, and respond appropriately, while others never hear a word that is said. Some members do not pick up on information shared in a group setting. They need direct contact, either in person, or by telephone.

For many Rotarians today, the most effective means of communication is the electronic mail or email. Email enables us to quickly communicate with club members. It is an excellent vehicle for reminders, time sensitive materials, and personal notes. Email is effective in communicating with a large number of people, or just one person. Email is cost economical. Email, however, is not the ultimate answer to effective communications. Many Rotarians never open their email, or inadvertently delete important messages without reading them. Also, systems problems can prevent people from being able to access their email.

Websites are one of the most effective communications tools in Rotary. Websites are fabulous for posting the latest news, promoting special events, newsletters, and a myriad of information critical to Rotarians. (For those who have not yet done so, you can log on to our website at http://rckalibo3850 .blogspot. com. For further improved communications, one can also join the RC Kalibo E-group rotaryclubofkalibo@yahoogroups.com.)

Not long ago, the telegram was the way to communicate internationally. Then the telegram was replaced by the telex machine, which was followed by the facsimile (fax) machine. Now the Internet is the way of daily communication. Television has also added to rapid communication. Yet newspapers, books, and magazines remain fundamental resources, difficult to replace. Let's support our magazines, the Rotarian and regional magazines like our very own Philippine Rotary Magazine (PRM) which are super sources of information and communication.

Rotary International President’s Message

Wilfred J. Wilkinson

April 2008

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Rotary is uniquely privileged to be a well-established, religiously and politically neutral organization with no governmental ties or obligations. We are known and respected as a group of men and women who simply come to help – by bringing clean water and food, teaching literacy and numeracy, providing assistance after a disaster, ending polio.

When there is a need, a crisis, or an emergency, Rotary is there. We know that, as Rotarians, part of our role in any crisis is to bring people together, rather than drive them apart. It is our role and also our responsibility.

Today, we are faced globally with a new crisis: the changing environment and the changing climate. It’s a frightening situation that will affect everyone but will hurt the poor and the weak far more than the wealthy and the strong. The days of wondering and considering and hoping are at an end, as it has become ever clearer that we are on a course that can be slowed but not stopped.

This past summer, the Arctic ice cap melted at a pace that exceeded even the most pessimistic expectations. The rate of melting and warming is accelerating in what seems to be a cycle of ever-increasing speed, and we cannot pretend that it will not affect us. It already has. In the American West, water is becoming more and more scarce as less snow falls every winter to refill lakes and streams. From my window in Evanston, I can see Lake Michigan, whose water level, like the other Great Lakes, is near or already at a record low. And as the supply of fresh water diminishes, the sea levels are rising, putting low-lying nations – many of them poor and developing – at increasing risk.

We know that in the years and decades to come, there will be crises, and there will be challenges. Will we let them drive us apart, or will we use them to bring us together? Will we be fragmented, or will we come together to address the universal needs of all people? Will we choose to address the desires of the rich over the needs of the poor, or will we do what is best for everyone on our planet?

The greatest challenges lie before us, now and in the years to come.

The deadline for completed applications to be submitted to the Rotary Foundation for these sessions is 1 July 2008.

Program synopses

The Rotary Centers for International Studies program offers fellowships for master’s degree study fields related to peace and conflict resolution. Beyond academics, Rotary World Peace Fellows also gain practical skills in conflict resolution appropriate to their individual careers.

Up to 60 Rotary World Peace Fellows each year enroll in the six Rotary Centers based at leading universities in five countries: International Christian University, Japan; Universidad del Salvador, Argentina; University of Bradford, United Kingdom; University of Queensland, Australia; University of California-Berkeley, California, USA, and Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA.

The Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program is a professional development program held in Bangkok, Thailand, through which up to 30 participants embark on three months of intensive study instructed by some of the leading specialists in the peace and conflict resolution fields. The specialized curriculum has been crafted to capitalize on the experience of both participants and lecturers while balancing theoretical and practical learning.

Weekly Rotary Foundation Thoughts

Week 29:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how our Rotary Foundation continues to be so effective because it matches money with volunteerism! In the words of Arch C. Klumph, founder of The Rotary Foundation, “Money alone does little good. Individual service is helpless without money. The two together can be a godsend to civilization.” Your financial resources and your time, energy and talent are vital to the Rotary mission. Every dollar contributed goes to supporting our programs and keeps the engine of our Rotary Foundation running throughout the world.

Week 30:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the Paul Harris Society. The Paul Harris Society is a district-administered recognition for those who elect to personally contribute US$1,000 or more each year to the Annual Programs Fund. Started three years ago by Past District Governor Wayne Cusick in District 5340 in San Diego, USA, societies have now been adopted in more than 80 districts worldwide. Individual districts handle all associated recognition for this program. However, the Trustees recently endorsed the Paul Harris Society, and TRF is developing a standard wearable recognition item. Paul Harris Society contributions are eligible towards Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member, Paul Harris Fellow, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Major Donor recognition.

COMMUNICATIONS: ROTARY MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION INCREASE

Dear District Governors,

To cover mailing costs, the RI Board recently approved an increase in the price of international subscriptions for The Rotarian to US$2 per issue effective 1 July 2008.

Please note that, despite significant increases in printing and distribution costs, this is the first increase in international rates since 1991. It is also considered a standard industry practice that international magazine subscription rates are higher than domestic ones.

We are aware that this may impact some members’ choice of magazine subscription. As a courtesy, we are giving you this advance notice so you can forward it to any clubs in your district whose members may be subscribing to The Rotarian. This will enable them to make an early decision if they may want to change their subscription due to the anticipated increase. The current rate is US$1 per issue, charged on each club’s Semi Annual Report.

The RI Board recently reaffirmed that all Rotary clubs are required to subscribe to The Rotarian or a certified regional magazine. We have observed that some member clubs in Philippines periodically change their subscription between the Regional Magazine (Philippines Rotary) and The Rotarian as is their prerogative.

To ensure that the 1 July Semi-Annual Reports are accurate we ask that any Rotarians or clubs wishing to cancel their subscription to The Rotarian please do so before 1 June 2008. To cancel the subscription

1) They should send the request to data@rotary.org with the member details.

2) They should then contact Philippines Rotary magazine directly to subscribe.

Contact email: office@philrotary.com

Telephone: (632) 926-7453 or 453-3800

Fax: (632) 929-1912

You can subscribe to Philippines Rotary on-line at www.philrotary.com

Rotary magazines inform, inspire and bring Rotarians together. It is one of the benefits of Rotary membership. We hope that this information will allow clubs to make an informed decision about their magazine subscription.

Kind regards

President's Message - Budyong April 15, 2008

Some would call it a blow-out, I was about to call it a celebration but the old “SIFU”, (grand master), PP Botoy, reminded me that it should be a ‘Thanksgiving’ meeting and then it crossed my mind that it was exactly what I wrote for the Invocation!

Eleven Club awards, two individual citations for District Chairs, One golf Champion trophy, three other awards on ‘utang’ by the District is a humongous achievement! As quoted by AG Nolly, “if there was an overall winner it would be us, RC Kalibo!” So, tonight, we gather to give thanks to the good Lord for he has answered our prayers as we prayed every meeting…to give us the strength and courage to SHARE, GIVE and LIVE in the ideals of Rotary. Here are your rewards so it is an opportune time to congratulate each other for without one the other would have been in vain. As the saying goes, “a commander of the highest calibre is useless without his soldiers!” Just to mention a few examples, Best Vocational Service Award – ‘youth congress’, PP Nonoy and your team this is your award. Best Community Project – ‘feeding program’, Rtn. Arnold and your team this is your award. Most Outstanding Avenue of Community Service Award – PP Art and your team this is your award! Best in Public Image/PR Award – PP Botoy and IP Megs and Rtn Cedric, this is your award. We must not forget Sec. Vic and his spouse Rtn. Bing for they have not slept together for TWO weeks whilst compiling the award bids. Thank you both for that great, great sacrifice! My apologies if you are not mentioned as there are too many to mention!

My fellow Rotarians and ever supportive Spouses this is not the end of the road but it is just the start of a long journey in community service though we are on the final leg of RY 2007-2008. So keep going with your untiring support and participation for more successful Rotary years to come. We did not make the 100% RFSM Club at the close of DISCON 2008 but we can still achieve this before the RY ends. So Rotarians, please give your contributions ASAP!

A week before the DISCON, RC Kalibo had presented a total of 16 Rotary medals for academic excellence to graduating Cum Laude students and 20 certificates for Leadership Award to the graduating Rotaract and Interact Club Officers.

I thank my spouse Becky for insisting on hosting this Thanksgiving Meeting and Spouse Rencee for giving way to your hosting as today is your birthday and you would have loved to celebrate your special day with everyone. Congratulations to one and all, thank you all once again and have a wonderful evening!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 3850

2008 REDISCOVER BACOLOD DISTRICT CONFERENCE

(Congratulations, Rotary Club of Kalibo!!!)

Rotary International District 3850 held its annual district conference, “2008 Rediscover Bacolod District Conference”, at the Planta Hotel and Residences, Bacolod City, last April 3-5, 2008, with the Rotary Club of Bacolod as host club.

The District Conference (DISCON) is the most important District meeting of the Rotary year. The purpose of the DISCON is to advance the Object of Rotary through fellowship, inspirational addresses, and the discussion of matters of importance to Rotary clubs and Rotary International. The conference showcases Rotary programs and successful district and club activities. Many Rotarians have said that they were never truly enthusiastic about Rotary until they saw an inspirational presentation on Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange, or Ambassadorial Scholarships at a district conference. The conference is a celebration to inspire Rotarians and an opportunity for them to enjoy fellowship.

A district conference is an enjoyable experience where Rotary programs and activities are discussed, friendships are made and strengthened, and various entertainments are shared. It is also the place where some, most, or all of the district business is conducted. For DISCON 2008, District Governor Reinier “Prince” Gerochi and the 2008 Discon Committees have worked for a lot of time, filling its three-day program with top speakers, Rotary information and inspiration, entertainment and – very important – ample opportunity for fellowship.

The 2008 District Conference agenda was anchored on this year’s theme, “Rotary Shares”, with special emphases on the four (4) elements of an Effective Rotary Club, namely:

1) Sustain and Increase Membership;

2) Implement Successful Service Projects;

3) Support The Rotary Foundation through our contributions and participation in its programs; and

4) Develop Leaders to serve beyond District- and Club-levels.

RI Director-Elect Jackson S. L. Hseih (Taipei Sunrise, D-3520, Taiwan) was selected by RI President Wilf Wilkinson to serve as his personal representative to our 2008 Discon, with his spouse Juliet representing Joan, Pres. Wilf’s spouse. As the link between our DisCon and the RI leadership, RIDE Jackson made two (2) major Conference addresses: on the RI Theme “Rotary Shares” during the Opening Ceremony last April 3, Thursday, and on the “status report” on Rotary during the TRF Fellowship Luncheon last April 4, Friday; he likewise offered a summation during the Governor’s Ball last April 5, Saturday.

As PDG Dave Villanueva said, “if the Rotary information and inspiring speeches and discussions are the building blocks of the District Conference, fellowship is the mortar”. For three (3) nights, it was all fun … fun … fun, with the Welcome Fellowship Dinner on April 3 (with the Grupo Mari Teves and the La Carlota Drumbeaters providing the entertainment), the District 3850 “Best of the Best” Talent Night on April 4 (with the famous Totong Villaruz Band providing the music), and the Governor’s Ball on April 5 (with Ballroom Dancing, complete with male and female DIs).

The most awaited moment of the Discon is the Governor’s Ball on the last night. This is the event in which all delegates has to wear their best formal attire and look in their dazzlingly best! It was also Recognition and Awards Night wherein the District recognizes all the hard work and best effort of those clubs who performed very well during the Rotary year. Our club garnered fourteen (14) major and minor awards, being one of the most-awarded (if not the most awarded) club of the night, to wit: 1) Most Outstanding Avenue of Community Service Award, 2) Best Vocational Project Award (Youth Congress), 3) Best Rotary Community Corp Project Award (RCC New Washington), 4) Best Community Project (Feeding Program), 5) Best Public Image/PR Award (Tri-Media), 6) Outstanding RCC Award (RCC SEALS), 7) Outstanding Avenue of Club Service Award, 8) 2nd Highest Contribution to The Rotary Foundation Award (a first for RC Kalibo!), 9) Outstanding Club Secretary Award (congrats, PP Vic!), 10) Outstanding Club President Award (congrats Pres. More!), 11) Outstanding Rotary Club Award (Category B), 12) Distinguished Service Award for PP Raphy Tayco, Jr. as RCC District Chair, 13) Distinguished Service Award for IP Megs Lunn as District Fellowship Chair), and 14) 4th Runner-up for AG Noli Sodusta during the Rotary Discon Golf Tournament. Still to follow is a belated recognition and thanks for being host to the Sectional Membership Seminar last January.

Thus, 2008 Rediscover Bacolod District Conference was not “just another meeting”; it was an opportunity for Rotary service, information and fellowship. It was also a showcase of Rotary Club of Kalibo’s eminence as one of the premier Rotary clubs in the district.

Congratulations, Rotary Club of Kalibo and the Sharing Team of President More!!!

The Rotary Foundation Corner - April 15, 2008

April 2008

Message from the Chair: April recognizes magazines and more

Dear family of Rotary,

In this world of immediate information through the Internet, e-mails, blogs, and cell phones, the very idea of celebrating Magazine Month sounds somewhat old-fashioned. Although information about Rotary Foundation programs is immediately available at www.rotary.org, your Rotary magazine is still the best place to read in-depth accounts of the Foundation’s remarkable work around the world.

In fact, the many pamphlets, guides, and request forms available from The Rotary Foundation continue to play a major role. For example, printed take-home instructions are still the most effective way to ensure that Foundation seminar information is reviewed at a later date. Every Rotarian should carry a copy of the latest Rotary Foundation Facts (159-EN), a concise, up-to-date summary of the activities of the Foundation, which is published each November and available from the RI Secretariat.

When recognizing our magazines and other printed materials, let’s not forget that the timeliest way to get information is on our Web site. During April, for example, the Future Vision Committee will report to the Trustees, who will be making many decisions about the future of the Foundation. These decisions will be reported on Rotary.org, and I ask you, as so many did in October, to comment online so that your Trustees will have the benefit of your opinions. Since its inception, the Future Vision Committee has relied very heavily on the opinions of Rotarians at all levels. In this final lap, we need these thoughts more than ever, and our Web site provides an excellent way to get your feedback.

Our Web site is indeed essential today, so let’s include it in our celebration of Magazine Month.

Trustee Chair, The Rotary Foundation, 2007-08

Rotary Weekly Thoughts

Week 27:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Rotarian efforts to alleviate hunger through World Community Service.

Rotarians have rallied to the aid of nearly 3.5 million people affected by famine in Niger, one of the world's poorest countries. The West African country is, at the best of times, prone to severe food shortages resulting from insufficient rains.

The two Rotary clubs of Niger, both based in the capital of Niamey, have set up a crisis committee and a bank account to coordinate and facilitate relief efforts. In addition to contributing approximately US$1,000 toward a disaster fund, the Niamey clubs are helping with the collection and distribution of emergency relief, including bags of rice from Rotary clubs in Côte d'Ivoire, and mosquito nets from Dakar, Senegal. The crisis committee is also working on procurement and transportation of food items, creation of cereal banks and a food exchange program and the purchase of life-saving medicine.

Rotary Volunteers are also sought to help promote vegetable gardening and the growing of off-season crops by irrigation. This is a long-term effort aimed at improving food security, diversifying food sources, and creating income-generating opportunities for farmers.

We need to remember that even small gifts make a huge difference to people in need. World Community Service, and the support of Every Rotarian, Every Year is a way for our club to make a real and lasting difference.

Week 28:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about meeting your personal financial objectives while supporting the humanitarian and educational programs of your Rotary Foundation.

Rotarians make the Foundation’s worldwide programs possible with generous and regular outright contributions. While charitable giving is its own reward, you may be pleased to learn that your gifts can often be tailored to meet a variety of personal and financial goals as well.

In some countries, donating a capital asset such as stock securities and real estate may provide you with additional tax benefits.

To learn more about how you can help The Rotary Foundation through effective gift planning, visit www.rotary.org or e-mail: EveryRotarianEveryYear@rotaryintl.org .

REDISCOVER BACOLOD DISCON 2008!

Once again, we have renewed our friendship. Strong fellowship among Rotarians anywhere SHIP ROTARY is evident to each and everyone and District Convention is one venue of where we renew our friendship with each other. It was a privileged again this time to be part once more of a great fellowship with fellow Rotarians from all over Negros, Visayas and Mindanao, likewise with some officers from the local District and International District, too.

Last April 3-5, 2008, Rotarians of the whole District 3850 convened at the newest hotel in town, Planta & Residences Hotel along Araneta Street, Bacolod City. The host club, Rotary Club of Bacolod South enjoined all forces to come up with a successful Discon 2008!

It is an honor to have met Rotary International Representative – Director Elect Jackson and L. Hsieh and spouse Juliet during the event. If to rate who will be the best dress of Retro during the second night, it will be Director Jackson. You will agree with me, seeing the evidence in the picture on the side.

The Plenary 1 session theme: “Rotary Shares in our District and in the World” started with an awe-inspiring National Anthem of Republic of China (Taiwan) performed by the students of Tay Tung High School Chorale (since R.I. Rep Jackson and Spouse Juliet is from Taiwan) and of course, the Philippine National Anthem led by the startling performance of the Rotary Club of Victorias Chorale. The address of District 3850 Governor Prince Gerochi on “Rotary Shares in District 3850 Today” is likewise astounding. His leadership this year is from Prince to a King – without a kingdom though (cheers!)

Welcome Fellowship Dinner on the first night of which my partner AG Boy did not showed up ( hehehe), I have to make a stand alone (hu!hu!hu!). Oh well, as I quote what Dir. Jackson said during the opening of the plenary of which he also quoted from Edward Everette: “I am the only one, But I am alone. I can not do everything, but I can do something……”, the rest is history. Not bad, because, some parts of the program were not materialized and it made my appearance too short, unexpectedly! (cheers!) Everybody was starving, anyway!

Plenary Session 2 with the topic “Rotary Shares thru Effective Clubs in District 3850” turned out to be very informative with many elated speakers like Rotary Leadership Institute Chair – PDG Rudy Estrellado; RI Public Image Zone Coordinator PDG Lynne Abanilla (a privileged to have met her for the first time and talked to her about future project); I am so delighted to see once again RI Membership Zone Coordinator, PDG Bobby Viray and his wife whom I met the first time during Boracay Discon 2007 and an impressive interactive table discussion from PDG Sonny Coloma, Jr – Past Rotary Institute Training Leader.

Plenary Session 3 with the topic on “Rotary Shares thru Participation and Contribution of Effective Clubs in the Rotary Foundation” was well facilitated by the dazzling gentleman from Zambonga City – PP Oliver Ong. During the plenary, San Juan City Mayor Joseph Victor “JV” G. Ejercito, spoke on his being a successful leader, being a young government leader. Likewise, R.I. PR Director-Elect Jackson shared Rotary in our World during his speech. It is in this session that The Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members, Major Gift Donors and Paul Harris Fellow were recognized and how significant their contribution to the world, especially for eradicating POLIO.

Plenary Session 4 is on “Rotary Shares thru Successful Service Projects and the Rotary Foundatio.” The session was more focused on Successful Projects of which PDG Toto Cua Locsin served as the moderator, being the most accommodating District Grants Subcommittee Chair. The panel resource speakers were: the birthday golden boy PDG Alex Huang on Water projects, always appealing PDG Lina Aurelio on Literacy project, PDG Mar Nery on Health and Hunger, and PDG Toto Cupin on Matching Grants.

The Best of the Best Talent Dinner Show on the second night was exhilarating. What with the theme costume “Retro 60’s & 70’s, everybody showed up in their best attire ever. The Totong Villaruz Band group made the night more thrilling, they offered non-stop Retro dance music. DG Prince even was obliged to give out prizes on the best dress during the night’s fellowship dinner.

Oh! and please I don't want to miss my hats off and great compliment to PDG Alex Huang for the fantastic singing voice and fellowship with him during the night.

The last day of the Discon the next morning, our Incoming District Governor Emma Nava and District Governor Elect Edgar Sy were presented to the delegates. It was a grand standing ovation for DGE Edgar, as he shared his dream to us about the world in his shoulder, his anecdote on KOLOKOY (by the way, his Rotary Name is Diotay and not Kolokoy hehehe). “Diotay” is small in the local dialect, but when you hear and see Edgar, his enveloping concern on the problem of the world today is worth emulating by our leaders. To those who is not familiar with him, his work with Rotary is encompassing and we look forward to his leadership in the year 2009-2010. RY 2008-09 Incoming District Governor Emms Nava speech was received with standing ovation, too, coupled with shriek blower delegates who has the whistle. (Mind your ears!) It added fun during the plenary, a whistle-exercise....

To those who were not aware, the Centinnial Team led by our gracious host,PDG Nanette Garcia had our centennial cocktail reunion in the afternoon of April 5 at Planta. There were about 12 members who made it and we took the opportunity to give a toast to now District Governor Nominee James Makasiar of Zamboanga City. The Centennial Team is really proud of you and we will be beside and behind you all the way to the next Rotary years to come....It was an honor to be your host and be part of the team, too. The year was my first year in Rotary. It was PDG Nanette who inspired and motivated me to do more for Rotary, indeed it is fun to be with Rotary, life is more rewarding and worth living for. It radiates in her (PDG Nanette) face the beauty of Rotary. It proves that lady Rotarian can make it good, and even better for the community. She is our motherly Governor. Thank you.

The most awaited moments of Discon is the Governor’s Ball on the last night’s event. This is the event of which all delegates has to wear their best formal attire and that the District recognizes all the hard work and best effort of those clubs who performed very well during the Rotary year thru awards. Our club vested 11 major and minor awards, too, to wit: Most Outstanding Avenue of Community Service Award, Best Vocational Project Award (Youth Congress), Best Rotary Community Corp Project Award, Best Community Project (Feeding Program), Best Public Image/PR Award (Tri-Media), Outstanding RCC Award, Outstanding Rotary Club Award (Category B), Outstanding Avenue of Club Service Award, 2nd Highest Contribution to The Rotary Foundation Award, Outstanding RCC Award, Outstanding Club Secretary Award, Outstanding Club President Award and Distinguished Service Award for IP Megs Lunn being the Fellowship Program Chair & PP Raphy Tayco, Jr. as RCC Chair and 4th Runner-up for AG Noli Sodusta on Rotary Discon Golf Tournament, you made it again, AG Noli. Rotary kids Clouds Lunn, Lenard, Marie & Nicole Tayco, Hannah and Gamaliel Sodusta really had great fun, too. Congratulations RC Kalibo!

It was during the last night that we really did enjoy to the fullest. The party turned out to be like a High School Prom, but only to those who stayed up late until 3 AM, okey. It was an invigorating and reviving night and it’s good we saved the best for last! Open bar, retro musical dances and electrifying Rotarian dancers, too. We could have stayed all night, but everything that is beautiful, has its ending, too. We only can cherish the rest of the event, until we see everyone again next Discon 2009!

MABUHAY DISCON 2008! Congratulations to one and all! You all deserve the best of everything. Good luck to RY 2008-09!!!

Before I end this, I would like to give another SALUTE to DGN Edgar Sy and his management and staff at Bacolod Executive Inn for the very warm and kind service, ever!
