Editorial Budyong - March 25, 2008

By: PP Raphy Tayco, Jr.

Rotary gives US$40 million to fund polio eradication efforts in nine countries (First portion of $100 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)

(Evanston , IL USA) Rotary International announced that its first installment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s $100 million challenge grant will go to nine countries battling polio, a crippling and sometimes fatal disease that still paralyzes children in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Rotary received a $100-million Gates Foundation grant in 2007, which the humanitarian service organization will raise funds to match, dollar-for-dollar, over three years. As part of the agreement, Rotary will spend the initial $100 million within one year in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.

The disbursement of $40 million will be used by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to support mass immunization campaigns, poliovirus surveillance activities and community education and outreach in the four remaining polio-endemic countries – Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan – plus five others where the poliovirus has crossed borders with the neighboring endemic countries – Chad, DR Congo, Niger, Somalia and Sudan. “This tremendous support comes at a crucial time for the polio eradication effort,” said Gianni Murzi, UNICEF’s representative in India .

India holds the highest number of polio cases of any single country, having reported 866 out of a global total of 1,308 cases in 2007. “With n ew methods and more effective vaccines, we have the tools to beat polio in India ,” said Deepak Kapur, chair of India ’s PolioPlus committee for Rotary. “Now is the time to step up the momentum to get polio out of India forever.”

Nigeria, once the global epicenter of polio has seen a 75 percent decline in cases between 2006, when 1,122 cases were reported, and 2007, which had 286 cases, http://www.polioeradication.org/casecount.asp . More than 41 million Nigerian children under five years were targeted for vaccination in February.

Rotary’s commitment to end polio represents the largest private-sector support of a global health initiative ever. Since 1985, Rotary has contributed US$700 million, a figure that will increase to $850 million by the time the world is certified polio-free. Besides raising and contributing funds, over one million men and women of Rotary have volunteered their time and personal resources to help immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.

With its community-based network worldwide, Rotary is the volunteer arm of a global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. Since the 1988 launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, when 125 countries were polio-endemic and more than 350,000 children paralyzed by the disease each year, polio cases have been slashed by 99 percent. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is spearheaded by WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

ROTARY NEWS

President-elect Lee challenges Rotarians to bring in more members

Increasing membership, especially among younger generations, was the focus of the Regional Rotary International Membership Coordinators Training Seminar, held earlier this month in Skokie, Illinois, USA. The annual RRIMC event trains Rotarians to help clubs and districts achieve membership growth.

RI President-elect Dong Kurn Lee called on the RRIMCs to get every Rotary club to bring in at least one new member in 2008-09. During his term, he will challenge each district to achieve a 10 percent net increase in membership and to start two new clubs.

Lee stressed the importance of recruiting younger Rotarians: “If we don’t bring in younger members, we’ll miss out on a great deal of energy and expertise. The strongest Rotary club is one that is diverse. It has members of different ages, both men and women. It has members of many different vocations and professions. It has members with different skills and talents.”

He also spoke about Rotary’s youth programs and alumni. “Good Rotaract and Interact clubs create good future Rotarians,” he said. “Clubs should maintain contact with alumni, so when it’s time, they can be invited to join Rotary.”

“Most alumni aren’t asked to join Rotary, and that represents a tremendous investment of our capital that we are ignoring,” explained RI General Secretary Ed Futa. “They have to knock on our door and beg us to be a part of the Rotary family. If we aren’t going to invest in them, then let’s stop the programs.”

John Hockin, a member of RI’s Membership Development and Retention Committee, urged the RRIMCs to be role models for all Rotarians. “Our approach and attitude must be changing. Bring in members – not members your age, but two generations younger.”

According to Hockin, if all clubs and districts meet Lee’s challenges, Rotary will welcome 100,000 new members next year.

The 10 clubs and districts with the highest percentage membership growth will be recognized during the 2009 RI Convention in Birmingham, England.

Rotaract News

This month in Rotary -- Rotaract celebrates its anniversary

In the late 1960s, noting the success of the recently formed Interact program, the RI Board realized the need for a program of service, activity, and fellowship for young adults no longer of Interact age (14-18). The name Rotaract (Rotary in Action) was selected to show the program's close affiliation with both Rotary and Interact clubs.

RI President Luther Hodges inaugurated Rotaract in 1968, with the Rotaract Club of University of North Carolina-Charlotte, USA, being the first club. The club received its charter on 13 March and had 21 members.

Within a day of the certification of the Rotaract Club of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, the Rotaract Club of the University of La Salle was chartered in Tacubaya, Mexico. The Rotaract clubs of Florence, Italy; Gaston College and Sylva, both in North Carolina; and Secunderabad, India, were all certified in the following weeks. Since the 1950s, many Rotary clubs had been starting unofficial clubs for young adults, so this fueled Rotaract’s rapid growth in its first few years. Rotaract grew from 21 clubs in 1967-68 to 289 clubs a year later. There are now 7,000 Rotaract clubs in 163 countries and geographic areas.

Rotaract clubs were originally open to young men and women ages 17-24. Since 1971, young adults ages 18-30 have been welcomed.

For Rotaract, life begins at 40

It was 40 years ago this month that the first Rotaract club was chartered. During World Rotaract Week, 10-16 March, Rotaractors and their Rotarian sponsors can conduct joint activities and be recognized by RI President Wilf Wilkinson.

Here are a few recent projects carried out by Rotaractors around the world:

  • The Rotaract Club of Berkeley, California, USA, hosts an annual “bone marrow-thon” registration for potential bone marrow donors, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Berkeley. Every year, hundreds of UC-Berkeley students register by providing a cheek swab.
  • Rotaractors in Alexandria, Egypt, started the Beautiful Minds project to provide income-generating materials to 28 underprivileged families with mentally challenged children. They’re also working to raise awareness of mental disabilities in the community.
  • The Rotaract Club of Chicago partnered with the Rotaract Club of Panama to provide the village of Bajo Bonito with a 3,000-gallon water tank and service connections to village households. The Chicago Rotaractors traveled to Panama to work with local Rotaractors on the project.
  • For the last three years, Rotaractors at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have traveled to different locales in Asia and the Pacific to build Habitat for Humanity homes.

Weekly Rotary Foundation Thoughts

Week 24:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about using District Simplified Grants to help communities in need.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many Rotarians are interested in developing projects to alleviate the suffering and hardship of individuals in the affected communities. Many of the needed items, such as basic necessities and medical care, can be provided through a District Simplified Grant (DSG).

District Simplified Grants (DSG) are one means by which Rotary districts can support short-term, humanitarian projects that benefit local or international communities. DSG funds can be used for disaster relief efforts as long as Rotarians clearly identify the proposed grant-funded expenditures and there is active Rotarian participation in the project. Clubs interested in receiving DSG funds must contact their district leadership.

Let’s learn more about our own district’s projects and how to get involved.

Week 25:

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about why there continues to be growing support among Rotarians for The Annual Programs Fund.

I'm sure that you share my pride in the wonderful programs of our Foundation, such as PolioPlus, Group Study Exchange and Matching Grants. Did you know that:

1. Your gift is wisely invested, so the full amount is directed to support the programs of your Rotary Foundation. Only a portion of the investment earnings pays for administration.

2. After a three-year investment cycle, half of your contribution comes back to our district to be spent on programs identified by Rotarians in our community, and a portion can be spent locally.

3. For those who live in countries with favorable charitable tax laws, sending in your gift before December 30th will ensure you receive a tax receipt for the current year and qualify you for year-end tax benefits.

Most important, our continuing support of The Rotary Foundation and our continuing involvement in the Foundation’s programs is an investment in our children’s future by making the world a safer and healthier place.
